Wolves and Everton fought out a battling draw in an intriguing encounter between two of the form sides in the division.
Coming in to the game there was a real buzz around Molineux. Wolves had collected 7 points from the last 9 and had pulled themselves away from the survival scrap.
The match started with Everton, also full of confidence, in the ascendancy and they forced a number of openings, including one fabulous, point-blank save by Hahnemann after it seemed Leon Osman only had to place the ball in the corner of the net. Wolves struggled to regain the cohesion that characterised the performance against West Ham, and the final ball seemed to be lacking. Everton opened us up again and Louis Saha managed to crack the bar with a long range effort. Wolves most likely route to goal was down the right flank, where the increasingly popular Ronald Zubar was rampaging forward. He made one run into the box but his attacking naivety took over and he just flashed the ball across the box, smashing it off the head of a defender. A sufficient display, fans would have been pleased with the half time score.
In the second half Wolves began to emerge more as an attacking threat, again with Zubar the main instigator and with Kevin Foley very tidy in possession. Everton were still ahead on chances though, and Saha headed over an Osman cross. They were missing the influence of playmaker Mikel Arteta, who pulled out shortly before the match. A flowing move down the Wolves right hand side involving Zubar, Foley and Kevin Doyle resulted in Zubar free in the box, but his curling effort went over the bar. Towards the end of the game Everton regained control of the match and had two clear cut chances. Firstly, a long ball was knocked down by Tim Cahill in to the path of Dan Gosling, but Hahnemann smothered bravely at his feet. Then Cahill ghosted into the box and slipped the ball past Hahnemann, but the wily Craddock chased back to clear the ball.
A difficult game and a point was probably a fair result, with Everton just edging it. The fact that we more than competed against such an experienced side gives fans a lot to believe in. We looked all the more a Premiership side, perhaps to do with the air of expectancy around Molineux, but nevertheless, we are a point closer to safety.
