The ever active Punjabi Wolves were privileged to be ‘Fans of the Week’ on Sky Sports’ Soccer AM show on 04th February 2012.
All travel and accommodation had been arranged for us by Sky Sports so we would travel to London on the Friday for a pre show party!
Friday came and 10 Punjabi Wolf’s embarked on their journey to London and with all the pre planning you just knew something would go wrong. A train derailment in Bletchley meant that all trains were either delayed or cancelled!! Instead of a smooth train ride from Wolverhampton to Euston we had to catch a local train to Birmingham New Street, then try and catch a Virgin train to Euston. With all our bags and two cases of Budweiser, for medicinal purposes, we boarded a packed train for Birmingham.
Arriving in Birmingham the next thing to do was to find out which platform to go to for the next available train to Euston so finding one we headed for the platform only to be informed 15 minutes later it’s cancelled! Heading back upstairs to check for the next train we decided to quench our thirst in the nearest bar. Finally we managed to board a train but with so many commuters we went straight to first class and got the beers flowing and after passing Coventry the Dhol came out in what was a ‘quiet class’! Pete received a few phone calls from our private taxis who were waiting for us in Euston. At last, after a train journey that included a Dhol in first class, two empty cases of beer, two seats with spilt beer and a box of Daz, we arrived at Euston train station.
We were met by one of our drivers who took us to where the other vehicle was waiting and made way to our hotel. A quick change and freshen up later we congregated at the hotels bar to decide the best plan of action, which would no doubt include a few drinks.
The morning after we got up bright and early and met in the canteen for breakfast and found our taxis waiting for us, so quickly we checked out and jumped in the cabs. Arriving at Sky Sports studios we were met by one of the crew who took us through, as we chatted amongst ourselves other crew members including Tubes, special guest John Scales former Tottenham and Wimbledon player, NFL star Ndamukong Suh and twelve cheerleaders from America went past us through to the studio.
Punjabi Wolves made a loud and proud entrance with two Dhol players banging away and the rest of us doing traditional bhangra to our seats and straight into our very own anthem composed and sung by Raj Bains.....pure class!! It was great to see a live working studio and now we appreciate the hard work and planning that goes into each and every show. As with all previous fans of the week it was our turn to showcase our footballing skills in the car park game. The star of this game was Raj Bains who scored two and Mindi scored one, a fairly respectable 3 we felt. Helen Chamberlain was so busy having a go on one of the Dhol’s for the first time she never watched the game and hence had no idea how many we scored!! Punjabi Wolves certainly left a lasting impression on all that are involved in Soccer AM.
