Fulham 0 – 0 Wolves – A Punjabi Day Out

A London away day, a large group of football fans, a dhol and alcohol, this had all the makings of a great day out and it didn’t disappoint. It started early, with the group congregating at the Jubilee Club in Willenhall at 8.30. I walked in and saw familiar and unfamiliar faces, but we were connected by one factor: Wolves. The morning started with a traditional English breakfast, typically washed down with a beer (or blackcurrant cordial for the less brave of us). The next major decision was which coach to take. 80 of us were split into two. It was now around 9.30. Paddy made the decision to sit next to the toilet. -  thinking tactically, in terms of easy access, we would later regret our rational thinking. We nicknamed the driver ‘Brother’, as he looked like Chris Rock with dreadlocks, and it was wise to show some sort of affinity, with our lives in his hands for the rest of the day. The Coach was like a United Nations meeting, with representatives from Whitmore Reans, Low Hill, Park Village, Wednesfield and the Scotlands. The beers began to flow, and my request for Guinness had been satisfied thanks to Andy Sahota. The morning star of the show had to be 3’2” Knocker, who had his own song. He also tried to teach us the words to his own tribute to our very own Matt Jarvis, unsuccessfully!  As the journey progressed, the toilet kept filling up, and eventually ‘The Pot’ began to overflow, spouting an awful smell from within it. This forced us to rethink our next toilet break, but it didn’t stop a member of the coach from suggesting standing on the toilet and peeing in the sink. He seemed disturbingly well informed about this technique. A stop at Oxford services saved our bladders in the end. As we pulled into the services though, ‘Brother’ managed to clip the ‘Other Brother’s Coach, leaving a nasty mark on the side. In true ‘Brother’ style though, he took it in his stride.“You’re getting sacked in the Morning, Your getting sacked in the morning” was the chant... We then moved onto Slough - the aptly named  Pub ‘The Wolf’ . We were welcomed to some Chicken and Sheesh Kebabs and more beer!!!!Finally we arrived at Craven Cottage, and it seemed we had arrived in a very ‘talented’ area. There was plenty of knocking on windows and smiling drunken men. We seemed out of place in this affluent area, as when we flooded out of the coach, we made our way to the ground with the dhol blasting, singing Wolves songs, as if it was a wedding procession. The sun was shining, and this seemed to be the signal to remove clothing for some members of our contingent. We went in to the ground and it was like going back in time, the only difference being the seats. To be totally honest as well, the less said about the game, the better. We’re a point closer to safety and have reeled off a number of clean sheets now, which can’t be bad.  Some of our group probably won’t recollect the match at all anyway. We assembled outside the ground again and the dhol was going.  Andy ‘Break dancing Rap star’ Sahota managed to engage himself in a dance-off with a local. Muscles were flexed and shirts were off, but the local constabulary decided to intervene, once a crowd of 200-300 had formed. I think Andy was half hoping Simon Cowell was watching. We left Fulham and made our way back to The Wolf, where we were treated to some Naan’s , lamb, daal and rice. All sense of time was lost, and some didn’t want to leave! We also caught a glimpse of Tottenham beating Chelsea, bringing some cheer to most of the Pub. After around half an hour of pestering, we managed to refill the coaches, and it was time to pull the spirits out from their hiding places. The drinking, dancing, drumming and singing carried on long into the night, until we hit the dreaded M6 roadworks. By this time many had run out of stamina, and the journey seemed to die out. We finally arrived back at the Jubilee Club at around 11 o’clock. It had been an enjoyable day, and thanks must go to all of the Punjabi Wolves lads. Well done and thank you to Andy and Raj and everyone else!  Kinu Kular
